Is HTML 5 Ready for use?
I was tempted to think that HTML 5 is a new concept. While reading the Wikipedia entry for HTML 5 I discovered the following : It has been in development ever since year 2004. Even though it is still work in progress as of August,2011 some features such as the canvas are said to be ready for use. Especially, after Steve Job’s commentary about why Flash was no longer necessary on IPHONE it started gaining more and more popularity among developers after year 2010.
As a programmer I feel confident about using HTML 5 in year 2011. Regardless of the fact that W3C might not officially approve of it until year 2022 . I believe that after, 7 years of development combined with all the knowledge we have gathered along the way from HTML 4 and its previous versions is sufficient enough for me. Thus, HTML 5 is more than ready for use.
I predict that the main area of application for HTML 5 will be smart phones for the next few years until it becomes a de facto standard for the rest of the internet browsers. True, modern browsers are able to process HTML 5 but one musn’t forget that it takes long time for users to let go of their old browsers. A great example is IE 6. Have you ever seen the website http://www.ie6countdown.com/ created by Microsoft? As of August 2011 9.7% of the world population still seems to not want to let go of IE 6. I wonder what is the percentage of IE 5.5 users these days? All this to show the difference why mobile phone market could afford much more easily to use HTML 5. As most of us change cell phones in less than 3 years the browsers of these smart phones stay much more up to date than an average pc user.
